the pixie cut.

i did it. i have a boy cut. its short. real short. but i do not hate it. just a little sad about it.

you might recall when i first cut my hair in preparation for losing it all due to chemo (watch it HERE). justin and i went together. we took before and after pictures and video. it was quite the ordeal. i went from happy, to furious, to mostly not happy. i hated my first hair cut. i walked out of the salon and yelled lots of four letter words. i hated it. not sure if i hated the hair cut or just hated that i had to cute my hair altogether. either way it was a dramatic, emotional, tough day. but we made it. i made it through 12 chemo treatments and held on to some of my hair. i started wearing a hat in mid december when it started to get real thin. it kept getting thinner and thinner but i never lost it all. so i decided not to shave it but opted for to keep my thinning hair and wear a hat. i own several hats but my grey hat always seems to be my first choice. kinda gross that i wore the same exact hat for basically 14 weeks. that might be a little weird. but it seemed normal to me. i basically wanted to wear my hat for as long as i could and then wait a little until it started to grow back and then we would go short. pixie cut style. since that it was justin has wanted since day one. but i was never ready.

this week i was ready. our friend anne rolfe (she is in the haircut video) babysat ava the day i got my haircut and when i came home really upset about my hair she said...you gotta go to heather. she will fix it. i love her. she is the best. so when i decided last week that i was ready for my little cut i texted anne rolfe and got in touch with the infamous heather. this haircut was a little different. it was just ava and i. no video. a few before pictures i took of myself without my hat on to document my hair post cancer. as i was driving to heather's house i started to get a little emotional. i was sad. scared. nervous. mad. a little excited to not have to wear my hat ever again. but mostly nervous. i knew i was ready for this cut because i actually made the appointment. i knew that i was ready. even though i was scared i knew i needed a change. it was time to cut off the old hair and start fresh. my hair was reminding me of cancer everyday. even though i am cancer free. i thought that my new haircut would make me think less about cancer but its doesn't. not yet. maybe in a week or so but not tonight. i still look in the mirror and do not recognize myself and that is a strange way to feel. i do not think i would have ever cut my hair this short ever in my life had i not been forced to due to cancer. i like my long hair. i think it looks pretty. but now i have short hair. and that is okay too.

back to the hair cut. we arrive at heather's house and upon meeting each other i am quickly laying my daughter on their family room floor because she had a dirty diaper. perfect way to start things off. but it's cool because she has two little boys. the environment was exactly what i needed it. not in a salon with a women who has no idea what she was doing...heather pulled up a chair in her entryway and we got to talking. it was perfect. our kids ran around and played as her husband help supervised little ava. i loved it. i asked her if she thought it was thick enough to cut it off or if i needed to wait...she said i was good to go. i asked her what she would do if she were me...she said she would go for it. pixie style. so she started cutting. no big mirror so we casually chatted and got to know each other. we are friends now. it was laid back and that made it all feel less like a big deal....this whole i am getting a boy hair cut thing. when she was done she handed me the mirror and i saw myself. i teared up. not because i did not like it but because it was just a little sad. i look so different. but heather was great. so thank you.

as i drove home thinking about my hair and how scared i was to see people. i called justin and he said he loved it and was coming home. not a total shocker. he is my husband. so he is supposed to say that. but he did say he really meant it. in the midst of my insecure thoughts i remembered...i did not necessarily choose to cut my hair off. i had to. because of cancer. not that pixie cuts are not great. i just do not think i would have ever randomly decided to chop off all of my hair. that made me feel a little better. i know i know its just hair. but this is a big deal for me. its short. my hair is short. one last thing before i post a few pictures...lie. its okay to lie to someone who has to shave their head (due to chemo) or cut it real short (due to chemo). be nice. they need to hear that they are beautiful. maybe the most beautful they have ever been. i am not encouraging people to lie. its just hard. i am nervous to see people and wonder what they are thinking so just be real nice about it. i cried tonight. but maybe i need to be more tough. its just hair. yeah right. not to me. its sad and i am still getting used to it and i think that is okay.

my normal hair after one chemo treatment.

my hair this morning. minus my hat. by the way it has grown in so much since my last chemo on feb 9.

my pixie cut.

if you like my hair leave a little comment love. if you do not like it please do not leave a comment.
it might hurt my feelings.

  14. Libby,
I can confidently and honestly leave a comment to say that I think your new cut looks amazing. Not everyone has a face for pixie cuts. It looks great and draws attention to your beautiful face. I know you did not do this entirely by choice but maybe it will give you a burst of funky sass as you begin a new life God has given you!
I always think girls with cute pixie cuts have sass! (a tad bit of jealously for those who can pull it off)
It's going to be great and you're husband wasn't lying when he said it looked good.
Oh, and now you have a reason to buy awesome earrings to show off :)

It is just 'hair' but hair is what makes us feel so feminine. Women really rely on their hair. So I know why it has got to be so hard for you. But you look so beautiful. There is absolutely nothing that I don't love about it! It is perfect.

And your earrings are super cute too btw!! :)

During that semester I had a lot going on with my family and a lot of trials to face on my own away from home, I decided to start blogging and thats when my friend introduced me to your blog and told me I had to start reading. During all of the trials that I have been through this year, your blog and the life you and your husband live for Christ have been SO unbelievably encouraging. Christ has been working in you and through you since day one of your journey and that is apparent to EVERYONE who reads your blog.

The cancer made your faith even stronger...and that is what I see in your picture. I see it in your eyes...and your smile. I definitely think that it's ok to have been mad and angry (I know I would have been!). I've been thinking about a post you had the other day...you were worried about writing something. it's okay to write about whatever is on your heart. This is your space, your place...don't worry about pleasing the many of us who don't know you personally. Because when you are honest & authentic...you are letting us get to know a part of you that matters to you! Thank you for sharing your story, I have shared it with many others struggling through life's issues...it's a great example on how to draw strength from the Lord and have real life emotions! 118. It's a control issue. Guess what you're right you can't control losing it, looking different, having to cut it, but GOD is in control as he always has been. He has a plan. Yes, it's just hair, but it is easy to let it define us...that's just the devil on your shoulder talking. You look great! YOU...and the cut too! Own it girl. God gives us the confidence behind the bravery, and you certainly are brave.

  119. Put your shoulders back, keep your head held high and own that haircut...you look fantastic!! Kind of like young Mia Farrow, just not as blond. I bet your husband loves it (like REALLY loves it)! I know it has to be sooo hard with all you have gone through and losing your hair is adding insult to injury. But seriously, your hair and your face look just beautiful! Wishing you all the best with your new "do". (on the plus side, getting ready will be much quicker for you)

  125. Libby, you look STUNNING! I LOVE the haircut. Seriously. This is a haricut I've always envied on women - mostly celebrities, you know. You rock it!!

Also, as I was reading your post,I was thinking... How cool that your hair will literally be a markder of how far you've come from cancer. Every inch that it grows will symbolize - in a very obvious way - another step away from cancer. I love that.

  127. Hello! I'm a new reader, but have been following your story for the last couple of months. What a privilege to read how the Lord is leading you so strongly in places you never wanted to go - including the Pixie Cut! Thought I'd chime in with all the others to add in blessing you with the truth: It Looks Great! Have to say, when you've been saying 'pixie cut' I thought, "Oh...." But what Heather did for you suits your face perfectly! Not many women can pull off this look, certainly not me!

***I think it's all in your great cheekbones!

God bless you, and CONTINUE to bless your little family! Thanks for sharing your journey with all of us - there are more people reading and benefitting than you might imagine!

  131. Libby,
I've never commented before but I wanted to tell you that you look beautiful! I went from having really long hair to cutting it as short as yours about 8 months ago. It takes a couple of weeks to get used to walking by a mirror and not being shocked by how short your hair is. Honestly there are some days where I miss long hair but 99% of the time I am so happy with short hair because it is so much easier to take care of. You will grow to love it and I am so proud of you for taking that step!

  154. Libby,

I have never posted anything on here before but I have followed your story from the beginning. I work with Marlene at school in Tennessee and her and I have laughed along with you, cried, and celebrated at school the day you found out you were cancer free. I just wanted to tell you that I love your haircut!! I think it is so cute on you:) I am very excited to meet you when you come to Nashville for the marathon. Thank you so much for sharing your journey and your faith.

  159. Libby,

I have never posted on here before but I have been following your story. So glad to hear that you are cancer free. I just battled my own own cancer story and finished my last round of chemo. I shaved my hair off when it started falling out. I now have peach fuzz all over my head. I can not wait for the day that I can get a cute hair cut. I was not sure how I would cut it but after seeing you beautiful picture I know that a pixie cut will be what I will looking forward to. Thank you for posting your new hair cut. Best of luck.

  163. i'm really not the type that will lie, i'd rather stay quiet. but, your hair looks AMAZING! seriously. fantastic. i know it must be hard becuase you are used to your long hair, but from an outsider's perspective it looks really good.

    ReplyDelete
  164. beautiful! i looked no where near this cute when i cut my hair that short two years ago (for pantene beautiful lengths). love it!

(and just a tip since it doesn't sound like you've had hair this short before, i think there is only one negative to it: growing it out (whenever you get to that point). frequent hair cuts become necessary to avoid the mullet that tries to sprout as your locks grow. but no need to worry about it if your friend heather is around with her scissors. she'll keep you mullet-free, i am sure. =)

  165. I love, love, love, LOVE the hair cut! I don't know what in the world you were so worried about. You're gorgeous! :-)

And I'm a fellow long hair lover so I know how scary getting the cut must have been, but you took a risk and were brave and look at you now! Hold your head up high and rock your beautiful hair, I love it.

  178. Tears literally running down my cheeks as I type because I look at your picture of your new hair cut and you look absolutely radiant! Those who look to him are radiant (ps. 34:5). Libby you look so sheek and trendy :) You're like a trendy hip momma! Also, hadn't told you this yet, b/c I didn't know if I should, but I prayed often during your cancer that you wouldn't loose all your hair. Not sure what prompted that prayer, but I didn't want you to have to shave your head. Not that loosing your hair and having it thin feels any better but maybe the Lord heard me and said 'yes!' so you could have this cute haircut. You look lovely. So proud of your boldness and bravery in getting this new do. I love it :)
